About the Center
The Cancer Center at Lake Manassas opened in February 2007, through the cooperative efforts of Fauquier Hospital and Prince William Hospital. The 20,000-square-foot facility is centrally located near Route 29 and I-66 to offer patients in Fauquier, Prince William, and surrounding counties radiation therapy and oncology services close to home under the care of physicians they know and trust.
The Cancer Center houses some of the leading radiation technologies, including Linear Accelerator with IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy) and IGRT (Image Guided Radiation Therapy) innovations. The Cancer Center is proud to be one of the only a few cancer centers in the area to use IGRT with "Smart Beam" Technology, one of the most significant technological advancements in radiation oncology in the past 10 years. IGRT allows our skilled technicians to more precisely target treatments to minimize side effects and damage to healthy tissue.
The Cancer Center has also been a leader in the development and planning of other services that are not presently offered within this community, including PET/CT imaging and brachytherapy.
Our Services
Image Guided Radiation Therapy with on-board Imaging - The Cancer Center is equipped with a linear accelerator for delivering radiation treatments, and it was one of the first centers in Northern Virginia to utilize new technology known as image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT). This technology is used to scan patients before daily treatment to ensure accuracy and significantly minimize treatment side effects. We are one of only a handful of cancer centers within the Washington, DC metropolitan area that treats patients who need radiation therapy. Here's how it works:
- High-resolution 3-D images of the treatment area are taken immediately before each daily treatment. This technique, known as image-guided radiation therapy, helps track changes in the position of the tumor or cancerous area in the patient’s body.
- The new images are compared with images from the patient’s original treatment plan.
- Depending on the changes that the images show, the patient’s position on the treatment table is adjusted so that the radiation can be delivered more directly to the treatment area.
PET/CT Imaging - This technology allows more accurate and efficient treatment planning as the images are imported into the cancer center treatment planning system in a matter of minutes.
Brachytherapy - During this procedure, radiation is delivered to the prostate by inserting small, rice-sized radioactive seeds into the prostate. It is a simple, same-day surgery that usually takes about two hours. Patients can generally return to their normal routine within a few days. Depending on the case, patients may need only the brachytherapy implant, but some may also require external radiation. Dr. Aggarwal will soon be working with local urologists to provide the
implants at both Prince William Hospital and Fauquier Hospital.
Chemotherapy - The Cancer Center at Lake Manassas is pleased to welcome Fairfax–Northern Virginia Hematology and Oncology, P.C., to our facililty. Patients can now receive chemotherapy services at the Cancer Center, as well as at both Fauquier and Prince William Hospitals, under the care of local doctors who work collaboratively to develop and monitor each patient’s treatment plan.
