Moira Sutton, M.D., joined the Cancer Center in July 2010, with privileges at both Fauquier Hospital and Prince William Hospital. Dr. Sutton is a board certified radiation oncologist with extensive training in intensive modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and image guided radiation therapy (IGRT). She is experienced in treating multiple types of cancer, with a focus on breast cancer. Recognition from her peers earned her a place on Northern Virginia Magazine’s 2012 Top Doctors list.
Dr. Sutton graduated cum laude from Duke University with a B.A. in Psychology. She earned her M.D. from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed her residency in radiation oncology at New York – Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University. She served as chief resident during her last two years of residency. She comes to The Cancer Center at Lake Manassas from Trident Cancer Center in Charleston, S.C. where she worked from 2006 to 2010.
Dr. Sutton’s vision and expertise have helped The Cancer Center expand its treatment options significantly since her arrival. She led the Cancer Center’s development of its prone breast cancer treatment program, making it the first and only center in Northern Virginia region to offer this option for eligible patients. Dr. Sutton also led the introduction of high-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy for breast cancer and certain gynecological cancers. In addition, she played an instrumental role in helping the Breast Center achieve national accreditation.
The expanded treatment capabilities reflect Dr. Sutton’s commitment to bringing patients the latest technologies and ensuring treatment delivery is as precise as possible to minimize toxicity. “As a certified breast center, I feel it is important to offer patients as many options as possible,” Dr. Sutton explains. “By making sure we have the latest technology, we can offer patients seeking comprehensive cancer treatment more of what they need in the most effective way possible.”
Dr. Sutton first became interested in oncology as a teenager when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. “During my mother’s battle with the disease, I was impressed by her team of oncologists’ skill and dedication,” she says, noting that the experience has helped her shape The Cancer Center’s approach to treatment. “I enjoy working at The Cancer Center at Lake Manassas and being part of a multidisciplinary team approach that provides comprehensive and individualized cancer care for patients.”
Dr. Sutton stays very active in the local community, leveraging her expertise to inform and educate the public about breast cancer treatment. She serves as the Community Outreach Coordinator for the Prince William Hospital Cancer Committee. She’s also a member of the Fauquier and Prince William Medical Societies and speaks regularly at local seminars, survivor meetings and community outreach events.
Dr. Sutton is actively involved in the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. She also is a member of the American Society for Radiation Oncology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. A native of the Washington, D.C. area, Dr. Sutton lives in Virginia with her husband and two children, and enjoys both skiing and tennis.
